The United States Naval Academy Gift Shop at the Armel-Leftwich Visitor
Center provides visitors and alumni with an outstanding selection
of clothing and gifts. The
mail order catalog extends this service to those who cannot visit
the Gift Shop. As the
world moved rapidly into the Internet age, it became increasingly
important to offer this service online. Harbor Software, Inc.
designed and built an online store that made all the items
in the published catalog available on the Internet. |

The
online store includes a public area where visitors can browse
through categories of items and place items in a shopping cart.
Visitors can then complete their orders using secure online
credit card processing. A
unique feature of this site is that visitors who are uncomfortable
with shopping on the Internet can still complete the order online
but call or fax their credit card information separately to the
gift shop. With over
10,000 visitors and hundreds of orders in the first four months,
the online store has been very successful. |

addition to the public area of the site, Harbor Software also
developed an administration area for easy maintenance by
non-technical gift shop personnel.
Since the entire site is database driven with almost no
static web pages it is easy to add or change items, add
categories, place items on sale, retrieve orders, and view
reports. After
logging in with a user name and password the user can only access
information specified by the system administrator.
This has proven to be a great benefit to Naval Academy Gift
Shop personnel because they can easily change the product
offerings to keep customers coming back with no need to call
technical support or have programmers modify the web site. |
